Download Tableau and be building charts in about ten minutes
Four short steps take you from this page to a working copy of Tableau on your computer. Choose your system below and follow along.
Pick your system
We try to guess your operating system from the browser, but you can always switch.
Tableau download for Windows
The Windows installer is a standard 64-bit executable. Run it, accept the license, and follow the prompts.
- Download the .exe file
- Run as an administrator if prompted
- Launch Tableau from the Start menu
Before you click
Make sure you have a recent version of Windows, a few gigabytes of free disk space, and permission to install software on this machine.
On a work laptop? Your IT team may need to approve the installer first.
Tableau download for Mac
The Mac installer arrives as a disk image. Open it, run the package, and Tableau appears in your Applications folder.
- Download the .dmg file
- Double-click the package inside
- Open Tableau from Launchpad
Before you click
Check that your macOS version is supported and that you can enter an administrator password when the installer asks for it.
Apple silicon and Intel Macs both have supported builds. Pick the one that matches your chip.
The whole process, step by step
Choose the version
Select the build for your operating system. If you are unsure, the latest release is almost always the right choice.
Save and run the installer
Let the file finish downloading, then open it. The setup wizard handles the rest and only asks a couple of questions.
Start your trial or enter a key
On first launch, Tableau asks how you want to activate. New users can start a trial. Licensed users paste their key.
Open a sample workbook
Use the built-in sample data to test everything works, then connect your own file and start exploring.
Which way to use your Tableau download
The installer is the same either way. What changes is how you activate it when you open the app for the first time.
If you only want to see whether Tableau fits your work, begin with the trial. If your company already bought seats, ask your administrator for a product key.
| Trial | Licensed | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free for a limited time | Paid subscription |
| Activation | Sign in with email | Product key |
| Best for | Evaluation | Daily work |
| Keeps working offline | Yes, within the trial | Yes |
If your Tableau download stalls
The download never finishes
Switch to a stable connection, pause any VPN, and try again. Large installers fail more often on weak Wi-Fi.
The installer will not open
On Windows, right-click and choose Run as administrator. On Mac, open System Settings and allow the app if it was blocked by security checks.
It says my system is not supported
Compare your operating system with the requirements on the desktop download page. Older versions of Windows and macOS are not always covered.
Activation fails
Check for typos in the key, confirm the date and time on your computer, and make sure a firewall is not blocking the activation request.
Can I install Tableau on two computers?
That depends on your license terms. Many plans allow a second install for the same user, but trials are usually limited to one.
